It can be challenging to find the right food products while managing blood sugars. We’ve rounded up the best yogurt for diabetics available in the USA and Canada to help you save time at the grocery store.
Best Yogurt for Diabetics: Plain Yogurt
Plain yogurt is typically low in sugar, as there are only naturally occurring sugars and no additional sugar added. Plain yogurt can be a great alternative for those looking for a low-sugar yogurt without non-caloric sweeteners. If you’re not a fan of the taste of plain yogurt, check out our Easy Ways to Flavour Plain Yogurt. If using a sugar-based flavouring, we suggest limiting it to less than 1 tsp per serving.
Best Yogurt for Diabetics : Non-Caloric Sweeteners
For those who don’t enjoy plain yogurt, a low-sugar yogurt flavoured with a non-caloric sweetener can be a suitable alternative. Non-caloric sweeteners, such as stevia, sucralose, and sugar alcohol, are not absorbed by the digestive tract. For this reason, they can provide a sweet flavor to foods without impacting blood sugars as sugar does.
Are non-caloric sweeteners healthy for you?
There has been much controversy over non-caloric sweeteners over recent years. While these sweeteners are unlikely to cause harm at typical amounts normally consumed, the World Health Organization (WHO) released guidelines in 2023 on the use of non-sugar sweeteners. In these guidelines, WHO suggests that in addition to reducing our intake of added sugar, we should limit our intake of non-sugar sweeteners. In short, they concluded that using non-sugar sweeteners in place of added sugar does not seem to support long-term weight loss or disease prevention.
Bottomline: we agree that we should limit our intake of both added sugars and non-caloric sweeteners. This is why our first yogurt choice is plain yogurt. However, it’s also really important to enjoy what you eat, and we know that not everyone enjoys the taste of plain yogurt. In this case, the amount of non-caloric sweetener consumed in a single serving of yogurt is unlikely to cause harm and can provide the benefit of adding flavor without impacting blood sugars.
Best Yogurt for Diabetics: High-Protein
When you eat a source of protein with a source of carbohydrates (including sugar), protein can help balance blood sugars. Here’s why: compared to carbohydrates, protein is slower digesting and can reduce the speed that carbs enter your bloodstream. In addition, protein will keep you feeling fuller for longer and help with portion control later in the day. High protein yogurt such as Greek or Skyr are our first choice as the best yogurt for managing blood sugars. If you’re not a fan of these thicker, high protein yogurt, traditional yogurt is still considered a protein source and can be a good alternative.
